Everything seemed to happen a little more slowly than usual; the birds glided laboriously through the sky, small fish sluiced through the water lazily and even the breeze seemed sluggish. A squirrel nibbled delicately on a nut it had found, but soon discarded it in favour of climbing the closest tree and settling in a shady spot. The few clouds that were present moved incredibly slowly, barely inching across the sky, and providing next to no relief from the intense midday heat. Sprawled across a bench, Cass shut her eyes and inhaled deeply. There was something deeply relaxing about the atmosphere in the park; despite the incessant chattering of nearby adults and the screeches of young children, it somehow managed to remain peaceful. Most of the park-dwellers were lying in the sun, desperately trying to attain the perfect tan, but Cass was content sitting in the shade. Her fair skin didn't tolerate the sun very well; it tended to turn a very unattractive shade of scarlet and never really entered the tanning stage. Lying on her back, she held a copy of "To Kill a Mockingbird" above her face, squinting as she tried to read the dog-eared copy. Suddenly becoming uncomfortable, she rolled over onto her front, her arms hanging off of the end of the bench while still holding the book open. She bit her lip, empathizing with the characters and feeling their terror, despite having read the book multiple times before. A stray curl fell out of the loose bun that she was wearing, and she quickly tucked it behind her ear, anxious to continue reading. With a yawn, Cass softly shut the book. She had a few chapters left, but wanted to save them for when she got home. Living on her own meant that she often had to find ways of entertaining herself, and she often dealt with this by reading. It allowed her to escape - even if just for a few minutes - into an alternate reality, much different to the shoddy, backstreet room she was currently renting. She had plans to find a room mate and purchase an apartment; it would be a much appreciated change from her current state of affairs. As it currently stood, though, Cass hadn't made very many friends in the new town, so her dreams of moving out would have to wait a while. Becoming agitated by being stationary, Cass slid off of the bench and stood up. She took a minute to stretch, working out the tension in her back caused by the hard bench, and then continued down the winding path through the park. You could walk for miles through the uninterrupted acres of meadows and fields, and today was one of those days were Cass felt like doing just that. She smoothed down the front of her red dress as she walked, planning a route in her head. There was a river not too far from where she was - only a couple of fields away - and that seemed like the perfect place to be on such a sweltering day. Her ballet shoes, although possibly not the best choice for walking, did the job. Sat beside the river, Cass found herself pondering the deeper complexities of life. She relaxed on the bank, her legs dangling in the water and gently swinging back and forth. A deep sigh escaped her mouth, stimulated by the philosophical battle currently raging on within her mind. Needing something to free her from her revery, Cass glanced around and tried to occupy herself with identifying each individual plant on the riverbank. quite a few WORDS , open , wearing THIS |
