-----------------------------------------------TELL ME, DID THE WIND SWEEP YOU OFF YOUR FEET did you finally get the chance to dance along the light of day
AND HEAD BACK TOWARD THE MILKY WAY ----------------------------------------------
The sun beat down on the back of Stella's neck as she warmed Fuego up for her training session. At a slow canter, the mare was itching to run, and had to constantly be put in check, Pulling the Lipizzan up, she flipped her collar up and turned the mare in light circles. After been unridden for a week with the chaos of the move to Foxtail, she was more than sour, and irritated at having to listen to another's commands. Bobbing her head, Firestarter locked her legs in defiance at the touch of Stella's whip. She hated using the thing, but when riding this mare, you often had no choice in the matter. Being a brat is not an option today, girlie. she murmured as she turned the Lipizzan in tight circles. It took ten minutes of this before, Firestarter lost her attitude, but if that was what it took to teach her, then Stella would do it all day. Only slightly winded, Fuego finally dropped her head in compliance and flicked her ears back irritably. Stella laughed and patted the mare's neck. That's a good girl; now we can get to the fun stuff. It was a beautiful course for cross country here at Foxtail. It would be the one they'd be competing on later in the week and she looked forward to working on it now.
Since Fuego was now more or less listening, she pushed her through some simple dressage moves on the starting turf to stretch out her legs a bit more. After a bit of that, she moved on to the starting post. Fuego's ears perked up when she noticed their location and she pawed restlessly. Easy, girl, this is just practice. With a knowing smile, Stella squeezed the mare slightly, receiving a burst of energy rivaling and rocket. A fun ride this would be, indeed.
----------
Clearing the course in a decent time was less of Stella's goal and more of a perk. The jumps were what mattered and the Lipizzan had cleared many with several inches give and had only balked at one of the water jumps. Hopefully, the energy Fuego had would last through the competition. Knowing her horse, she doubted it wouldn't. Rubbing the sweaty mare's neck, she cooed her approval. You did wonderful today, Fire, baby, but I'm afraid I let you wear yourself out. Wiping the sweat of her own brow, Stella let the mare walk around the green, cooling her off as much as she could in this heat.

we all fall down -LIKE TOY SOLDIERS- The sun was setting in the horizon when the Hart family got up from the night slumber. The man of the house hold walked down the hallway of the home to wake up his only daughter for her to get up and feed aniamls. Devon walked back to his room and went to the bathroom and started a shower. He had a feeling that today was going to be a busy day he could just feel it. Devon jumped into the shower and washed his body quickly in the warm water and stepped out. His ears catching the claw marks hitting the wooden floor he could hear their only dog Duke was ready to go outside for the day. Devon went to the mirror in the bathroom to shave and brush his teeth so he would look clean cut. After that he got dressed in his uniform and walked into the kitchen fixing his tie as he began to get the ceral out of the cabint and the milk out of the frige. Usely Devon cooked breakfest, but today he was feeling lazy so he decide to have ceral. Roxie was already dressed for the barn and started packing her lunch for the day. Devon loved his little girl so much that he couldn't help, but to let her get what she wanted. Roxie handed Devon a bag that also held his lunch and smiled. It's your favorite she grinned at him and got her bowl of ceral and sat down at the bar to eat.Why thank you sweetie, PB & Jelly is my favorite He grinned and ate his ceral with his daughter. After breakfest they walked out the door toward the police car that was sitting in the driveway. Devon was lucky to get on the police deparment here in his home town and get to have his daughter ride with him when he had to drop her off places. Yes, he had another truck but he only used that when he was going to horse shows with his daughter or going camping. Devon turned the police car on and stuck it in drive and headed off to FoxTail Creek. Driving down the main drive of FoxTail Creek was quite from the house to here. Roxie was sitting in the passanger seat looking out the window ready to see what the day would bring. Devon loved his daughter very much and being a cop put him in places he didn't want to be at times, but Roxie seemed to understand that he couldn't be with her all the time. But when they were together they did things special like go horseback riding or camping by themselves to have a little fun. Parking the police car at the barn it seemed quite like always and wasn't much action going on around here either.Have a good day sweetie! He yelled out of the rolled down passanger window as Roxie jogged toward the barn waving goodbye. They sure grow up fast... Was all he could think about on his way out of FoxTail.
---------------------- An yawn escaped his lips as he drove back down the road of FoxTail Creek Stables to get his daughter and go home for a good nights rest. Today had been somewhat easy on his part as he wrote some tickets, pulled people over, and took a call about a car accident outside of town. Devon didn't mind writing tickets or pulling people over, but what really got him was the car accidents. Devon hated seeing people dead in the car and helping pull out the victums that was still alive or going to the parent of a teenager and telling them that their child had passed away in a car accident. That was one thing he hated, but luckly this person was okay and got out of his car. Everytime he went to a accident the only image that runs through his mind is Roxie. That is all he cares about and if anything happened to her his life would be history pretty much. Roxie was his world and if anyone could tell Devon was Roxie's world too other than horses. Something white had caught the mans hazel eyes as he glanced over the drivers side window to see a horse and rider working on the cross country course. Devon wasn't a rider, but Roxie had taught him everything a "show dad" should know about horses and how to help her in a show in case she need the help. Roxie was a good teacher and even thought Devon would say "She looked amazing" only Roxie new it matter. It didn't matter what other people thought about his daughter. Devon slowed the car down to a complete stop to watch the horse and rider as the worked their way though the course. He rolled his window down to get a better look of the horse and rider aswell as the finished the course in pretty good time and they looked really good doing it too. Once they had finished Devon put his hands out the window and clapped lightly so he would spoke the horse.

Stella continued to let Fuego cool down before she took her back to the barn for a well needed rinse and a leaf of hay. Leaning back in the saddle, it was only Fuego's perked ears and shifted focus that alerted her to the police car rolling to a stop outside the course. A young officer in aviators applauded them from the driver's side. Stella laughed lightly and reined in her mare. It seems we have a fan, lovely, let's go and say hello. Fuego was more than eager to check out this stranger and his vehicle, surprisingly not balking at the cars humming engine. The pair trotted over leisurely to greet their audience of one. The Lipizzan snorted brusquely at the man and pinned her ears back as they approached though, before the petite brunette swung down from the saddle. Don't mind her, she's a nosey brat with everyone. Wiping off her slightly dirty palms on the pants of her breeches, Stella stuck out her hand cordially. Stella Carter, manager of the broodmare barn here at Foxtail. She glanced at the police car again. You're not here to deal with any trouble are you? she asked with a laugh. She doubted if there was anything urgent, the officer wouldn't be stopping to applaud her cross country performance.

we all fall down -LIKE TOY SOLDIERS- Hazel eyes watched as the girl with the white horse trotted toward the police car. Devon opened the door of the car and stepped out as he wasn't to worried about getting dirty now. He was done with his shift and ofcouse was here to get his daugher, but this women didn't know that at all. Devon took his glasses off as nose and held them in his left hand so he wouldn't look completly masked. Devon also had his hatt already off sitting in the passanger seat so he didn't worry about it. His black suit though was getting pretty hot under the sun, but it was nothing he could handle as he has been in worse conditions before. Hearing the sweet voice of this women made his heart kind of sore, but he pushed it back down deep inside so it wouldn't show on the outside. Devon wasn't in for a relationship or well thats what he thought anyways. He couldn't control his heart, and plus be barly new this person who had an English accent. Devon Hart, I'm the local police office here.He grinned at her and reached out and shook her hand. Devon couldn't help it but to chuckle about him being here because there was trouble. Unless he had missed a call, but for all he knew it was a big no.Actual, no not really. Unless my daughter got introuble today at the barns. He grinned at the women and ran her name though his head"Stella Carter". It was a pretty name for a women who had a beautiful look to her. Devon wanted to slap himself for thinking things like that agian as it had been a couple years that he had ever talked to a girl like this that was his same age. Other than talking to his two sister and women he pulled over for speeding that was the only women he talked to. Well, he talked to the barn manager when he first moved back here. You must be new around here, I havn't seen you around or pulled you over yet. So your doing good.He grinned at her as his eye wrinkled around his eyes.

Running her hand through her tangled mess of locks, Stella leaned back on her mare as she spoke to the officer. Well, nice to meet you Devon. she said with a smile. When he mentioned a daughter, her eyes lit up. She always loved kids and the thought of one on the grounds delighted her. Oh, your daughter rides here? That's great, how old is she? Fuego chose this moment to end her job as leaning post and pranced back away from Stella, already impatient with the turn of events. The petite woman nearly lost her footing, but quickly recovered. Pulling the mare beside her again, she chided her in irritation. Fuego, behave yourself, you devil Slightly flustered, she turned her eyes back onto Devon. Sorry about that, she can be quite a handful at times. Most of the time actually... anyway, what were you saying, oh yes, this is my first week here and as I have yet to acquire a car, you won't have to worry about me on the roads just yet. she countered with a laugh. Fuego whinnied in agreement. She and my other two horses are my only forms of transportation at the moment. Does your daughter board a horse here as well, or you yourself, for that matter? He didn't look like the riding type, all muscle and man, and consumed with his job as a officer, but you could never know, maybe he was her newest competition.

we all fall down -LIKE TOY SOLDIERS- Devon grinned at the women infront of him named Stella and watched as her eyes light up when he told her about his daughter. Usely when he said something about a child they took off running in the other direction without a second look. Those women didn't stay in his life and of course not in Roxie's life. Everyone wanted to be his friend when he came back home from war, but the only thing they wanted was him and well he was a package deal. Where ever he went Roxie would be right beside him.Yes, she has been riding here since she was five year old. She is seven years old.Devon was watching the horse that Stella was holding onto move backwards and without knowing what he was doing went to grab her so she would fall backwards. He quickly let go of her arms seeing that she had caught herself he looked away and then back at her.No I'm sorry, I shuoldn't have grabbed you like that. He kicked at the dirt that was below his black combat boots and then looked up at her with a grin. That's good and bad. If you ever need a ride home, I got room in the back of the police car or when I bring the old truck out sometimes. He grinned at her just offering her if she ever needed a ride home he wouldn't mind giving her a ride. Devon was a nice guy to most women, but sometimes he would rather just walk away from them and not deal with them at all. After what happen five years ago he would rather not deal with it.Well my daughter Roxie, she owns a little pony named Scooby-Doo and then we lease out Swift Merrylegs from Riley Hanson. Well Riley pretty much gave Merrylegs to Roxie since she was little and the horse needed to be worked. He grinned alittle and shook his head no at the question about him riding.I was never bit by the bug, but when Roxie wants to go riding together I lease a horse from the stables and take him on the trails. It was true that he did lease a horse from the stables, but it wasn't like often that he went riding. He never owned a horse, but since he had Roxie he came to know why horse people was always broke. Devon looked at Stella and sighed alittle and leaned against the police car.Plus being overseas for six years didn't help the horse thing out much. He looked at her hoping that wouldn't bother her that he had been away from his child for mainly six years of the childs life. It bothered him, but he didn't show it to hardly anyone other than his brother Seth.

Stella looked up intot the taller man's eyes as he apologized for grabbing her. It's perfectly all right, you didn't mean any harm, she assured him. Quickly changing the subject to avoid any unnecessary awkwardness, she moved on. Seven...that must be a fun age, she sounds adorable. What's her name? Her eyes moved over Devon's handsome frama again as he mentioned giving her a lift if she ever needed one, but stayed quiet as he went on. Oh, Merrylegs, he's a fun one I hear, and as I live on the grounds, I doubt I should ever need the assistance, but I'd be glad for a ride into town if I ever need it, and in turn you can borrow my older mare, Cherry, to go out with your daughter. No need to lease one out she added with a wink. There, all even. She wasn't one to give over the use of her horses lightly, but doubted he would be riding often and didn't mind sharing her thoroughbred every once in a while. Besides, she sort of liked him. It was a pity he was never 'bitten by the bug" as he put it. Then she would have found him, for all of his personality, completely irresistible. But what was she thinking? She barely knew him. besides, he could be married, for heaven's sake. She inclined her head inquisitively at the mention of his travels. Overseas? You mean in the military? Recently? Her thoughts drifted back to his daughter, who at seven, must have lived much of her life with only one parent if Devon's active duty had been recent. Poor thing.

we all fall down -LIKE TOY SOLDIERS- Hazel eyes watched Stella as she talked about how it wasn't no problem that he touched her. But really it was, he shouldn't be jumping out and touch women like that even if they was falling. Don't beat yourself up about it...Was all he could hear his brother saying to him. Devon learned everything from his older brother Seth so when Seth had to move across the country for the Miltary it pretty much broke broth of the brothers hearts, but that had been a couple months ago. Devon grinned at her and watched the women as her while face lit up when she smiled and it was very beautiful. Stella was beautiful young women and it didn't bother him that maybe the age was different which was okay to him.Roxie Hart and we have heard that little MerryLegs is a very good horse for her to learn from since the one we have is a little turd at times. He grinned at the thought of Roxie riding Scooby and Merrylegs. He may not be a horse person, but it didn't matter because he loved watching his daughter ride. When it came to shows Devon took off so he could be there for his daughter and when he had the days off he would come to the barn to watch her ride. He was very involved into his daughter's life even though he was gone for six years.Oh I can't take your horse from you. Who knows you might need her for something, but ofcourse if you ever need a ride in town I'll be your man. He chuckled a little and knew that maybe he could have a good life with someone, but it probley wouldn't happen anytime soon. He was still trying to get used to living in America after six years overseas. Devon shook his head yes when she asked about the military.Yes Ma'ma, six years and had to come back four years ago to sign divorce papers and leave my daughter at my parents house. Hardest thing in my life to leave my daughter here alone. He knew he had said a lot just then, but why keep secerts from people? It only hurt others just like his ex-wife hurt him and his daughter, but he had no love for his ex-wife and could never love a women like that left his child on the doorsteps of his parents house.

Laughing at his description of her boss's old pony, Stella smiled widely. Well, at least she'll learn a thing or two on the back of him. At his refusal of Cherry, she raised an eyebrow mischieviously. Oh, I assure you, my Cherry doesn't get half as much attention as she wants nowadays. With my two other horses in training, she doesn't get enough work as it is. Getting rather chubby, actually. I'll have to find her a regular rider soon, actually, or she'll spoil... Realizing she was drifting off topic, Stella hurriedly reverted back to what the point of her statement. Either way, just keep it in mind, I trust you on her now that I know I've got Roxie to keep an eye on you while you're out. She sounded like a sweet, little thing, Roxie. A daddy's girl, and a good one, at that. Her expression turned to compassion as Devon told her about his duty. That sounds rough, I'm sorry, but luckily you're back in the States safe and sound, she added, trying to lighten the mood. Ex-wife, though... she chided herself softly. She wasn't a big fan of men with baggage anyway, she reassured herself. Thinking back on his little girl tugged at her heartstrings. She wondered why she couldn't have stayed with her mother while Devon was overseas, but obviously there was good reason for it. It must have been tough growing up without a real mother figure so young, but at least she had her father. At least she still had her father.

we all fall down -LIKE TOY SOLDIERS- Clayton looked toward the barns of FoxTail Creek and smiled a little knowing that his daughter would either in be in the barn or even in the arena ridding either Scobby ot Merrylegs. Merrylegs was a very good pony for Roxie to learn on plus she has rode him for awhile now and it was just easier to keep him leased out than to give him back and let him get fat. Clayton looked back at Stella and smiled.Well, we will see what happens. We don't go out riding very often. Maybe you can join us sometime. He grinned at her. Stella was a nice gal and maybe even will meet Roxie one day here, but he wasn't going to go find Roxie and push Roxie to the women. That would be very rude considering Roxie probley don't even want another mother in her life after her real one left her.Yes, I'm glad to be home, but at times I do miss it then I see Roxie and I change my mind. Roxie is my world. He was being truthful with Stella as he wasn't going to lie to her. He might not tell her everything right now, but he had a feeling that he was going to see Stella a lot more often.

Typical of her mare, in any occasion, Fuego pawed restlessly as the two talked. Barely any time had passed but her patience was at an end and her mood turning sour. Flashing Devon an apologetic and exasperated look, she swung up into the saddle and circled the mare in a tight circle. Dealt with for the time being, Stella turned back to Devon with a slight smile playing along her lips. I'd love to; I haven't had half as much time as I'd like to explore the trails and woodlands on the property. I've heard great things about it though, and its quite an adventure, you just have to make sure you don't get lost. Fuego snorted and eyed Devon wickedly. The brunette slapped the dapple grey mare lightly on the neck. Behave for five more seconds, will you? Mentally, the woman smiled at how devoted Devon seemed to be to his daughter Roxie. It was a beautiful quality to find in a man - such devotion to his children. Snapping back to reality, apologies began working their way out of her mouth. Unfortunately, Fuego has the patience of a toddler, so for both of our sakes, I ought to take her in. She glanced in the general direction of the barn, eyeing several riders far out in the distance. I'll probably see you around quite a bit though, with Roxie riding here. Stella would have suggested the two of them head over to get Roxie, but she wisely decided that she didn't want to give the wrong impression to either Roxie or her father. She barely knew them and there was no point in potentially upsetting the young girl.

we all fall down -LIKE TOY SOLDIERS- Clayton watched the mare at Stella's side as she began to get alittle testy and want to get going. Clayton may not be a horse person and know everything about horse's, but he knew when a horse got tired of standing around. I guess having a seven year old helped with that. Clayton took a step back closer to the car so Stella could work her mare. He didn't want to be in the way of the mare or Stella so he just stayed by his car.Well maybe you can tag along and help Roxie from getting lost in the woods or something. She is always the leader as I tag along behind her.He grinned thinking about Roxie always cantering circles around her, but when Roxie didn't know when he had time off he took some lessons so he could lope with her and keep up. Clayton grinned and looked at his watch on his wrist and smiled. It was about time to get home so he understnd why Stella needed to leave.Don't worry about it Stella, I'm pretty sure Roxie is waiting for me at the barn anyways. Well I do hope to see you around. He grinned and put his sunglasses on and then opened the car door and sat down. He didn't turn the car on with Stella right there. ----------------------
Clayton waited for Stella and her mare to be a couple strides away before he started his car and careful passed them and went up to the barns. Clayton stepped out of the car again and went into the main barn. When he came out of the barn he was holding the hand of seven year old Roxie. Her blonde hair bounced around her shoulders as she walked with him toward the cop car.Clayton helped the girl into the car and shut the door and walked around and opened the door before looking back at Stella and waving good-bye.

Reining in her handful of a horse beneath her, Stella smiled and waited for the officer to get inside his car before giving Fuego a bit of head. Pulling at the reins, Stella drove her back toward the cross country fields as Devon pulled past them. She waved again, though she wasn't sure he saw her, then took the mare back out on the main road to head back to the barn. By the time they reached the stables, Devon was greeting an adorable blonde little girl in full riding regalia and a broad smile across her face. Not wanting to be caught staring, Stella dismounted her Lipizzaner by the near end of the barn and began walking her toward her stall at the far end. As she entered the aisle, she looked up in time to catch a wave from Devon as he entered his car. Smiling, she waved back and pretended to fuss over Fuego as she watched them drive away. Interesting, she mused to herself, but she figured her personal reprimands that had been whizzing through her head went unheeded because they were unnecessary. Why would I need anyone else but you three, Fuego? The mare snorted and lipped at her hair as the laughing rider took her in from a good days work and a well needed rest.
